As I ride my bike through Kazimierz on a fall afternoon, memories from the 1980s come flooding back. There were three of us strolling through the empty, misty Main Square, where a lone saxophonist broke the silence. My friend warned that commercialization would soon flood this charm.

Indeed, the comparison between today’s Kazimierz and the Old Town makes me understand that sadness. Kazimierz has a unique, slightly gritty atmosphere that is worth preserving. Much of its charm comes from the subtle lack of light, which allows the square to evoke quiet memories through the filter of suspended glow.
